With the July 31 deadline for filing Income Tax Returns (ITRs) getting closer, once again people on social media are talking about a possible extension. Every year it kind of happens the same way; taxpayers keep wondering if the government will quietly give more time right before the due date. But, so far, there isn’t any official word from the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) saying the deadline will be pushed. Tax professionals are basically saying don’t bank on rumours; just finish the filing before July 31 so you don’t end up dealing with penalties, extra interest, and refund delays that are getting delayed.
As of now, there is no official notification from the CBDT extending the July 31 due date for filing Income Tax Returns.
Even if speculation is still everywhere online, experts point out that extensions are usually only given in unusual cases, like broad technical snags on the Income Tax e-filing portal or major administrative problems. Until the CBDT or the Income Tax Department makes something official, taxpayers should treat July 31 as the final cutoff.
No. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) hasn’t released any circular, notice, or press release regarding an extension for Income Tax Return filing.
Taxpayers should stick to official updates from the Income Tax Department or the CBDT, rather than social media claims or unverified messages that move around on WhatsApp and similar apps.
Rumours about deadline extensions tend to show up almost every year, as the due date starts coming closer and closer.
This year, the chatter got louder because a few taxpayers faced delays during the phased rollout of ITR utilities. But tax experts say that the Income Tax Department has already put the needed utilities in place, and also boosted the e-filing system so it can cope with the higher traffic coming in.
As per the rules, there is no real sign right now that the government is about to extend the deadline.
Nishant Shanker, Chartered Accountant, Tax Advocacy & Compliance, said taxpayers should not shape their plans purely on speculation.
As per him, even if early on there were doubts about filing utilities, the Income Tax Department fixed the issues and improved the portal; hence, it can manage more visitors.
Likewise, Adhil Shetty, CEO of BankBazaar, suggested taxpayers should stop waiting for an extension that might not arrive. He also mentioned that deadline extensions, in the past, were usually given only when extraordinary situations popped up.
Missing the due date can lead to several consequences, including:
In short, filing before the deadline can help taxpayers steer clear of these problems.
The July 31 deadline usually goes for individual taxpayers, salaried employees, pensioners, and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) whose books do not need to be audited.
But people whose accounts require an audit typically face other timelines. Those due dates are shared as per the notices from the Income Tax Department.

There is no official announcement from the CBDT on an extension, so taxpayers should not bank on mere speculation. The safest bet remains filing by July 31.
