Diljit Dosanjh’s much-awaited film Punjab 95, which later showed up internationally as Satluj, is back in the national spotlight again, kind of out of nowhere. Like just a few days after it hit ZEE5 Global digitally, the film suddenly vanished from ZEE5’s India catalogue. And that left people pretty puzzled, plus it kicked off a bunch of talk online, you know on social media.
This disappearance has pulled a lot of attention toward the movie’s messy, troubled path to release, its link with human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, and also the real-life police officers that are shown in the film. So basically, here’s the whole picture on why Satluj was taken down, whether it’ll come back, and the true incident that inspired one of Diljit Dosanjh’s more controversial projects.
Earlier, Diljit’s movie Satluj, announced as Punjab 95, premiered on ZEE5 Global after years of delays. Whereas, after a few days of its release, Indian subscribers noticed that the film was no longer available on the streaming platform.
In an official response, ZEE5 said the movie was made unavailable in India due to legal duties and regulatory necessities. They didn’t spell out the exact details, but they pointed out that the decision was taken to stay in line with relevant laws.

The film was initially developed under the working name Punjab 95; it directly ties back to the year when human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra disappeared.
Then, after long certification problems and reported requests for several edits, the filmmakers finally released the project in international markets as Satluj.
The name change was widely viewed as an attempt to secure a release. This happened to preserving the film’s central message.
Jaswant Singh Khalra was a Punjab-based human rights activist who exposed alleged illegal killings and quiet cremations during the state’s militancy era. After digging up official files that mentioned thousands of unidentified cremations, he got abducted in September 1995 and later was found to have been kept illegally, then murdered, and in the end he turned into a kind of emblem for justice. But now people remember him that way.
Kanwar Pal Singh Gill, commonly called KPS Gill, worked as Punjab’s Director General of Police during the insurgency. He was often praised for directing anti-militancy operations. While at the same time, his time in charge also came with allegations of human rights violations. He was never actually convicted in the Khalra murder case. His name stays tightly tangled with the whole controversy.
Ajit Singh Sandhu was the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Tarn Taran and one of the core accused in the Jaswant Singh Khalra murder case. Investigators said that Khalra was taken in custody under his command, like basically led by him, or at least that was the allegation. Sandhu died by suicide in 1997 before the trial wrapped up, so the claims against him were not properly settled.
Jagpal Singh, a former Punjab Police Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was convicted for his part in the kidnapping. but also killing of the human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra. Along with other police officials, he received life imprisonment sentences. This case became a notable turning point in a major human rights matter.
Even though Diljit Dosanjh has, every now and then, been hit with criticism about song lyrics, certain public remarks or social media wrangling, Satluj still seems to be the most legally and politically touchy project from his acting journey.
But unlike the earlier dust-ups, this one dragged on for years with certification hold-ups; there were reports of pressure to do a large number of edits, then title changes followed, and in the end it even got a restricted release beyond India before it was later taken down from Indian streaming.
After Satluj disappeared from ZEE5 India, Diljit Dosanjh seemed to answer indirectly on social media.
He urged people who had already downloaded the film to keep it and also pass it along, adding that the story belongs to Punjab and that he stands with the legacy of Jaswant Singh Khalra.
Not long after that, Dosanjh posted a video where villagers in Rajasthan are seen watching Satluj together. In the caption, he hinted that Khalra’s voice can’t be shut down and that the film’s point still keeps breathing even after removal from the Indian streaming catalogue.
Critics have been praising Satluj for its controlled, restrained way of storytelling plus performances that hit hard emotionally.
In the film Diljit Dosanjh plays Jaswant Singh Khalra with a steady, quiet belief. The focus sits more on persistence than on heroics. The movie doesn’t lean into dramatic sensationalism about violence, instead it shows the personal, emotional weight of chasing truth during one of Punjab’s roughest chapters.
And it’s not exactly a ty; instead,pic. Satluj feels more like a human rights docudrama, where it examines responsibility, justice and remembrance in a more grounded, human way.
The Satluj controversy is not confined to cinema.
Supporters say the film preserves an important chapter of Indian human rights history and pays tribute to Jaswant Singh Khalra’s bravery. But critics say its portrayal of history is still politically charged and controversial.
Whether as a historical drama, a political statement or an ode to a human rights activist, Satluj has become one of the most talked about Indian films of recent years, mainly because its story reverberates long after the events it portrays.
