The Chaitra Navratri is scheduled to begin on the 19th of March 2026. The devotees worship the nine forms of the goddess Durga on the nine sacred days. The devotees also follow various rituals in order to seek the blessings of the goddess. One of the most important rituals is the lighting of the Akhand Jyoti. The eternal flame is lit for a period of nine days. The devotees light the sacred flame on the day of Ghatasthapana and ensure that the flame is not extinguished. The readers would be able to know the process and the advantages of lighting the Akhand Jyoti through this article.
Akhand Jyoti has significant spiritual value. It is associated with divine energy and positivity. According to devotees, this flame eliminates darkness from their minds. It also brings them the unlimited blessings of Goddess Durga.
Furthermore, this sacred lamp provides a peaceful and pure atmosphere at home. It also helps in better social and family life. Hence, this practice is followed by devotees with utmost faith and dedication.
There are certain strict guidelines to be followed while lighting the Akhand Jyoti. These guidelines are to be followed to make the process pure and effective.
The first and foremost requirement is to make sure the flame does not die out for the entire nine days. This is the most important requirement.
The next requirement is to keep the lamp facing the Northeast direction, which is called the Ishan Kon. This direction is said to be the abode of God.
The vessel to be used for the lamp must be earthen or brass. These two materials promise to bring good fortune.
Before lighting the lamp, a proper platform must be created. This platform must be created with the help of Akshat, turmeric, and Ashtadal Kamal. Then a red cloth must be kept on the platform, and the lamp must be kept on it.
The wick of the lamp must be Raksha Sutra if possible. This will help the flame to burn for a longer time.
The room where the Akhand Jyoti is kept must be maintained very cleanly. Hygiene and purity must be maintained for the entire period of Navratri.
Devotees have the option of ghee or oil. Ghee is considered more auspicious.
You can also use mustard oil or sesame oil if you don’t have ghee.
You must also consider the placement of the lamp. Place the ghee lamp on the right side of the Goddess. Place the oil lamp on the left side of the Goddess.
Chanting this mantra will increase the spiritual impact of this ritual. When lighting the Akhand Jyoti, recite:
Om Jayanti Mangala Kali Bhadrakali Kripalini |
Durga Kshama Shiva Dhatri Swaha Swadha Namostute ||
The above mantra invokes Goddess Durga. This mantra will create a divine atmosphere during this puja.
A proper procedure is to be followed on the first day of Navratri.
Never keep the house empty while the Akhand Jyoti is burning. At least one person should stay in the house at all times.
Lighting the Akhand Jyoti during Navratri is considered to be a great act of devotion. It is considered to show discipline and faith. The devotees who follow this ritual correctly attract positivity and divine blessings in their life. The holy fire not only cleanses the surroundings but also enhances inner peace and faith.
